Entry requirements
Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training
A level 5 diploma in education and training is approved as initial teacher training to lead to QTLS. No degree is required, but applicants should be able to demonstrate:

Good competency in English and maths.

Level 3 qualification in the subject or subjects you want to teach.

Reading and communication skills that are adequate to meet the training requirements.

No criminal background which prevents working with young people or vulnerable adults.

A relevant qualification at a level above that of their learners, at least level 3 in their area of specialism.

They are teaching or training a group with at least five learners or trainees aged 14+ for a minimum of 100 hours over the duration of the diploma.

Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills
QTLS is awarded by SET (Society for Education and Training) and the eligibility requirements are different. For up-to-date guidance see the SET website.
As a guide, eligibility requirements as of January 2023 are:

To hold an eligible teaching qualification at level 5 or above.

To hold eligible level 2 maths and level 2 English qualifications.
-
To hold a level 3 qualification in all subjects that you teach during Professional Formation.
-
To hold a level 3 SEND qualification if you work in a SEND setting.

Be teaching or training in a further education and training setting for a minimum of 4 hours a week, throughout the Professional Formation programme.

Be regularly teaching groups of five or more post-14 learners throughout the Professional Formation programme.

Have identified a suitable supporter.
